My first garden shed

I’m moving house soon and my new house has a decent sized garden but it’s full of weeds and potential but it has no tool shed or garden shed. I can see that my first task … a little like marking my territory is going to be building some kind of wooden garden shed.

I have little doubt that a good outdoor shed will be a massive asset which can double as a tool shed to store all my tools, of which I have many, and the lawn mower.

My new garden is only a small garden, despite being about the biggest garden I’ve ever been fortunate to have. It’s about 100ft long and 16 ft wide so it will fit a small wooden shed.

The thing is that backyard sheds and wooden garden sheds come in many different sizes so I will need to think how to approach it.

I’ve always been a DIY man and keen to make stuff myself rather than go and buy things so it’s possible that I will make the outdoor storage shed myself.

The thing is that making your own stuff gives a huge amount of satisfaction and really, it’s not that difficult.

In my job I used to have to construct all kinds of things. I wasn’t always good at it and when I first started, I was very insecure and didn’t know how to make anything; I made a lot of mistakes.

One thing that a friend carpenter told me that has stuck with me as a strong lesson is: “Measure twice and cut once”. This is as important for anyone wanting to build an outdoor shed from scratch.

This is such an important lesson because I messed up lots of times and ended up with a lot of waste. But if you follow this rule, you will reduce the amount of times you have to chuck things away and have to start a project again.

I have made this mistake lots of times so it’s worth learning this rule.

If I make my own small shed, it’s quite likely that I will make my own wood shed plans because it’s just the kind of thing I used to do regularly. But, shed building plans for many people may not be so easy to contemplate.

And although you might want to make your own shed plan and you may actually decide you want follow someone else’s ready made shed plan.

I would understand that because things sometimes seem simpler than they actually are, but you will need to decide whether building your own shed from scratch is something you can do without assistance, or not.

You may decide that it makes much more sense to buy a ready made outdoor garden storage shed instead of risking making a mess of it yourself if you use someone else’s shed plans.

The art of making diy outdoor sheds is the really the art of methodical organisation and good order.

As with any construction project, building an outdoor shed requires good planning and methodical organisation to avoid making a mess. But it’s not beyond the capability of most people who are good at using tools. So don’t be too afraid.

There is nothing better than successfully completing your own construction project.
